5 Tips If You Want to Build a Lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop

Attention Jedi’s! Are you traveling to Galaxy’s Edge soon and want to add a piece of armor to your collection? If so, look no further!

In honor of “May the 4th be with you”, we have compiled 5 tips for you Jedi’s that want to build a lightsaber in Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World.

Back in January of 2022, we had the amazing opportunity to be a part of this experience and it did not disappoint! Even me who is not the biggest Star Wars fan really got into it!

You can be a part of this special ceremony over at Savi’s Workshop in Hollywood Studios which is located in the heart of Galaxy’s edge across from Ronto Roasters.

So let’s take off and explore 5 tips if you want to build a lightsaber in Savi’s Workshop!

#1 Make the Reservation ASAP

Not only do you need a Valid Admission and Theme Park Reservation for Hollywood Studios on this day, you will also need a reservation to make your lightsaber. You can make reservations 60 days out, just like dining reservations and we recommend you do it as soon its available!

When making the reservation, you’ll choose the date, number of builders and the time for the experience. Each builder will have 20 minutes to make one lightsaber and one guest is allowed to watch.

When booking the reservation, you’ll provide a credit card number which will only be charged if you do not arrive as scheduled or do not cancel at least one day prior to the reservation.

Note: We recommend you read the cancellation policy on Disney’s website before leaving for your vacation.

#2 Make an Evening Reservation

While making the reservation, we recommend you choose the latest evening time possible for your family.

When booking, we chose one of the last reservation slots and we are so glad we did! Because we made the lightsaber later in the day, we weren't worried at all about carrying this very expensive piece of merchandise around all day or exactly how we were going to ride rides with a very large lightsaber.

By the time we got out of the reservation, it was dark in Galaxy’s Edge so we got some really stellar pictures in the dark as well as less crowds to fight with in front of the Millennium Falcon.

Note: If your family is attending Fantasmic, check the showtimes to see if it will work out better to build your lightsaber before the show or after.

#3 Look Up Options In Advance

There are several design choices you will make while building your lightsaber and with only 20 minutes, you will need to make these decisions fast!

To help ensure you get the lightsaber you want, we recommend you look up the different design options ahead of time and have a general idea of the pieces you want to use to build your lightsaber. I, Krista, was watching Bryan make his choices and was so glad he looked ahead of time because otherwise I would’ve had major anxiety!

One of the first decisions you will make is choosing the design of your hilt. When checking in, you will be asked what hilt theme you would like and will receive a cloisonné pin to identify your selection.

Below is a list from Disney’s website about the different themes.

To see the different design styles, we recommend you do a quick google search and look at the different images.

In addition to the hilt, you’ll decide the color of your crystal which can be red, blue, green, or violent as well as the different hilt pieces based on your theme selection.

Once you’ve made all your decisions, the gatherer will assemble your lightsaber with the blade.

Note: While there are specific options you can choose during the experience, you can customize your lightsaber using items purchased from Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. Bryan knew what crystal he was going to choose for his experience but we did go to Dok-Ondar’s shop before his reservation so he could choose some other customized items he wanted.

#4 Plan to Arrive Early

Guests are allowed to check in 15 minutes prior to their reservation time and we recommend that this be your plan! The last thing you want is to be in line for a ride when your reservation is up and then have to run across the park to make it in time. This didn’t happen to us or anything…

Each person in the party must be present upon check-in and admission and late arrivals may not be accommodated.

When something inevitably comes up, you’ll thank yourself for planning to get there early!

#5 Make a Plan for Getting It Home

So you’ve made your lightsaber and had an amazing time in Disney World and now it’s time to go home. While packing, you have a slight panic attack when you realize your lightsaber does not fit in your luggage! What do you do?!

This exact experience happened to us when Bryan built his lightsaber. Luckily we found out the night before leaving and were able to go to the gift shop and ask for options on how to pay to get our merchandise home.

Bryan took the hilt off the blade and kept that in his luggage but had the blade itself shipped to our house. While he was in agony waiting for it to arrive, we are glad everything worked out for us in the end.

Our situation involved a flight which is why we had to have it shipped so you road trippers can most likely bypass this tip. For anyone flying though, we recommend you measure your suitcase to see if the 31 inch blade will fit or if you will need to be like us and explore other options for getting it home.
